<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a Mach-Zehnder interference meter type optical switch (MZI type optical switch) whose structure can be simplified and which has low power consumption and can have its switching time shortened. <P>SOLUTION: The MZI type optical switch has two optical waveguides A and B put close to each other at two places and is provided with directional couplers at two places, and also provided with two arm optical waveguides (a) and (b) between those directional couplers 13a and 13b; and the two optical waveguides A and B have refractive index temperature coefficients which are different in sign from each other and at least one of the two arm optical waveguides (a) and (b) is provided with a thin-film heater (heating means) 15 capable of heating. This MZI type optical switch can have its structure simplified by using the two optical waveguides whose refractive index temperature coefficients are different in sign from each other, the power consumption can be made low, and the switching time can be shortened. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI</p> |
