PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a flexible webbing for a seat belt having a small thickness, compactly housed and having excellent compactness and comfortableness, and to provide a method for producing the same. SOLUTION: The webbing for the seat belt is obtained by using a synthetic fiber multifilament yarn composed of a flat cross section filament having 1.5-8.0 flatness ratio of the single filament cross section as a warp yarn. In the cross section of the webbing in the warp direction, the major axis of the single filament is arranged so that the horizontality index (HI) expressed in the sum total average of the cosine (hi) of an angle (θ) between the major axis direction of the single filament cross section of the warp yarn constituting the webbing and the horizontal direction of the webbing is 0.75-1.00.
