PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To develop an epoxy resin used for a one package coating material which is excellent in rust preventive power, adherence, solvent resistance and the like, and which gives a coating film having characteristics comparable to those of a two package coating material. SOLUTION: The epoxy resin for a one package coating material is obtained by reacting (1) 30-60 wt.% of an epoxy resin having two or more epoxy groups, (2) 5-20 wt.% of a 2-18C alkylphenol and/or a novolak phenol, (3) 10-40 wt.% of an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid, (4) 3-15 wt.% of an aliphatic polycarboxylic acid, (5) 3-10 wt.% of an aromatic polycarboxylic acid and/or an alicyclic polycarboxylic acid, and (6) 3-20 wt.% of a polyisocyanate compound, wherein the weight ratio of the constituent (4) to the constituent (5) is (0.5 to 2.5):1. Since the epoxy resin is obtained by reacting the constituents (1) to (6) each in a specified amount, with a specified weight ratio of the constituent (4) to the constituent (5), it can provide a one package coating material with a rust preventive power, adherence, and chemical resistance comparable to those of a two package coating material.
