PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel catalyst capable of manufacturing benzaldehyde at high yield by catalytic-oxidizing toluene or substituted toluene in vapor phase and to provide a method for manufacturing the benzaldehyde at high yield using the catalyst.

SOLUTION: The catalyst is a catalyst for manufacturing the benzaldehyde from toluene or substituted toluene and is an oxide catalyst containing antimony, tungsten and molybdenum as indispensable components. The benzaldehyde is manufactured by catalytic-oxidizing toluene or substituted toluene with molecular oxygen in the presence of the catalyst in vapor phase.
