WAVELENGTH VARIABLE FILTER AND WAVELENGTH VARIABLE SEMICONDUCTOR LASER USING THE SAME

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a wavelength variable filter which is capable of continuously and stably sweeping wavelength over 100 nm or more and whose design and wavelength control is easy and to provide a wavelength variable semiconductor laser.

SOLUTION: The wavelength variable filter is constituted of an optical waveguide 11 having a means changing a refractive index and a slab waveguide 12 disposed near the optical waveguide to such an extent that light can be bonded to the optical waveguide. The slab waveguide 12 has a reflection surface vertical to a light incident direction and the light made incident to the optical waveguide 11 leaks out to the slab waveguide 12 at a fixed angle determined based on the ratio of the equivalent refractive index of the optical waveguide 11 to the refractive index of the slab waveguide.
