PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a belt and an edge abutting member for detecting a belt position in a width direction from being damaged due to contact and interference during the attaching work of the belt. SOLUTION: This device comprises: the edge abutting member 17 which abuts on the edge of an intermediate transfer belt B near a sheet transfer area; and a pressing elastic member 18 to press the edge abutting member 17 to a belt edge. Then, the detector is provided with an edge sensor 19 to detect the position of the intermediate transfer belt B in a width direction by a change in the position of the edge abutting member 17, a retracting elastic member 21 to retract the edge abutting member 17 to the outside of the edge of the intermediate transfer belt B by resisting the elastic force of the pressing elastic member 18 and a connection member 22. The connection member 22 is connected with a belt frame F2 while a tension roll Rt is moved to a tension working position, and the retracting elastic member 21 is separated from the edge abutting member 17 in a state that the connection member 22 is connected.
