PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem that much memory capacity and memory band width are required because display data of an on-screen display (OSD) function for displaying characters or graphics superposed on video signals are stored in a memory. SOLUTION: By using a processing method for performing compression having no deterioration by utilizing correlation between OSD pixels adjacent to each other in the horizontal direction and canceling compression of pixels having no correlation, OSD compression/extension processing having a high compression effect is performed. When the OSD compression/extension processing having the high compression effect is performed, the capacity of OSD display data stored in the memory can be reduced and the consumption of memory band width for reading out the OSD display data from the memory can be reduced.
