The friction lining (1) for a vehicle has a backing plate (2) with a friction layer (3) pressed onto it. A thin non-visible contrast layer is applied between a section of the friction layer and surface section of the backing plate facing the friction layer section. The thin contrast layer has a predetermined structure suitable for the identification of the friction coating. The contrast layer is constructed so that it creates an image reproducing its structure when the friction lining is irradiated by a predetermined type of radiation.
