The present invention provides a method for applying an electrically conductive coating on at least a portion of a sheet-like component of an electrochemical (EC) cell. The method comprises providing an electrically conductive material having a flowable consistency and applying it on the she et- like component while creating a shearing stress in the electrically conducti ve material to form the coating. The invention also concerns an apparatus capab le of implementing the method. Finally, the invention relates to a lithium electrochemical cell in which a protective coating is applied between the cathode and the cathode current collector, the coating comprising a potassiu m- based soluble compound and a conductive additive.
