A method of outputting speech to a user of an application, in which the application generates, with reference to speech data, data relating to speech output in accordance with requirements of said application, comprises the steps of generating, by said application, a sequence of one or more segment designators, said segment designators designating speech segments, and associating, by said application, a required-speech-data-identifier with said sequence, providing speech data, said speech data including a plurality of speech segments respectively associated to segment designators, and an actual-speech-data-identifier, comparing the required-speech-data-identifier with the actual-speech-data-identifier, and composing speech with reference to said sequence of segment designators and said speech data in accordance with the result of said comparison.
