PURPOSE: A method for defrosting a refrigerator is provided to reduce power consumption due to unnecessary defrosting operation. CONSTITUTION: If a compressor is operated, first defrosting time and a first defrosting period are inputted to a refrigerator control unit(S200). It is judged whether an external temperature reaches a set temperature(S210). If the external temperature is lower than the set temperature, the first defrosting period is changed into a second defrosting period(S250). It is judged whether operation time of the compressor reaches first set time(S240). If the external temperature is higher than the set temperature, it is judged whether a door of a refrigerator is opened(S220). If the door is not opened, it is judged whether an operation rate of the compressor reaches 70%(S230). If the operation time of the compressor reaches the first set time, it is judged whether the defrosting period is the first defrosting period(S260). If so, the first defrosting time is changed into second defrosting time(S270). If the defrosting period is the second defrosting period, it is judged whether the operation time of the compressor reaches second set time(S280).
