PURPOSE: A method and an apparatus for controlling an average picture level(APL) of a plasma display panel are provided to remove the afterimage by reducing the number of the maximum sustain pulses in a step-by-step. CONSTITUTION: A method for controlling an average picture level(APL) of a plasma display panel includes the steps of: receiving(S1) an image; detecting(S2) the average picture level(APL) for the image; and reducing(S6) the number of the maximum sustain pulses for the image having a low APL.
