PURPOSE: An optical scanner of a printer is provided to remove the cause of poor imaging due to birefringence. CONSTITUTION: An optical scanner of a printer includes a light source(10), a condensing lens(50), a polarizer(70), and a photo-detector(80). The condensing lens condenses light emitted from the light source on a photosensitive drum(60). The polarizer is located on an optical path between the light source and the condensing lens to change the light into an elliptic-polarized state. The photo-detector detects light that has passed through the condensing lens to remove noise caused by diffused reflection. The polarizer is located between the light source and a deflector for deflecting the light to a main scan direction. The polarizer includes a linear polarizer(71) for transmitting light having a linear polarized component, and a phase retardation plate(72) for elliptic-polarizing the light that has passed through the linear polarizer.
