A motorized vegetation trimmer apparatus (10) comprising an elongate main handle (12) to which is connected a motor (14) that rotatably drives a trimm er head (16) located at a distal end of the handle. The trimmer head (16) carri es one or radially outwardly projecting cutting members (18) which cut vegetati on as the trimmer head rotates. Each cutting member comprises a finite length o f flexible strand. The cutting member is releasably gripped by a one-way gripping mechanism including a reciprocating gripping member (25, 152, 252) and a compression spring )50, 150, 250) that biases the gripping member into gripping contact with the strand.
