Glycol esters of formula (I) are novel; where R1 = H, 1-4 C alkyl or a gp of formula -0(CH(R10)CH20)nR20; R2 = H or a gp of formula -0(CH(R11)CH20)mR21; R3 = a gp of formula -0(CH2(R12)CH20)pR22; R4 = a gp of formula -(CH(R13)CH20)rR23; q = 1 Or 2; qhen q = 2, each R1 and 2 may be the same or different. R10, R11, R12, R13 each = H or CH3; R20, R21, R22 each = H or an acyl moiety of a mono- or polycarboxylic acid; n, m, p each = 0-15. R23 = an acyl moeity of a polycarboxylic acid; r = 1-15. If one or more of R20, R21, R22 and R23 is an acyl moiety of a polycarboxylic acid gp, 0-3 of the remaining carboxy gps of the acid form the acyl function(s) of a moiety R20, R21, R22 and R23 in another unit of formula (I). At least one of any free carboxylic acid gp is neutralised.
