PURPOSE: A method for managing item attributes of a portable terminal is provided to add read attributes, read/write attributes, or hiding attributes to all items, and to enhance a security function, thereby enabling a user to efficiently store and manage important data. CONSTITUTION: A system inputs items from a portable terminal, sets the items to read/write attributes, and stores the set items in a memory(S16,S17). If a user presses a search menu, the system searches a desirous item among the set items(S6-S8). If an edit command is inputted for the searched item, the system decides whether the item is set to the read/write attributes, and if so, the system adds information inputted by the user, and if not, the system outputs a message informing the user that an edition is incapable(S13-S15). If the user presses the search menu as inputting a locking code, the system searches a desirous item, and if the user wants, the system changes attributes of the item(S9-S12). The system sets the searched item to hiding attributes according to read attributes, read/write attributes, or the inputted locking code(S2-S5).
