The device has a central strip with two adjacent strips (16) axially extended along one of small sides of the strips (16) by an L shaped portion (15) having an oblique folding line (27). The L shaped portion has a circular or semicircular portion (26) destined to come in contact with upper part of cans disposed in four corners of package to maintain or to constitute a lateral blocking unit of each can disposed in the corners. An independent claim is also included for producing a cardboard package for containing items such as cans.
