PURPOSE: A backlight for an LCD is provided to arrange a fluorescent lamp inside a light guide to minimize loss of lights so as to improve luminance and reduce external shocks applied to the backlight. CONSTITUTION: A backlight for an LCD includes a reflecting plate(20), a light guide(30), a diffusion plate(40), a fluorescent lamp(10), and a protection sheet(50). The reflecting plate has a projected portion and a flat portion formed at both side of the projected portion. The light guide is located on the reflecting plate and includes a hole corresponding to the projected portion of the reflecting plate and the second flat portion corresponding to the flat portion of the reflecting plate. The diffusion plate is placed on the light guide and uniformly distribute lights that have passed through the light guide. The fluorescent lamp arranged on the projected portion of the reflecting plate. The protection sheet is located on the diffusion plate and protects the surface of the backlight.
