PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging apparatus that facilitates manual focus adjustment of its photographing lens and can put the lens in focus on a part that a user intends with high precision. SOLUTION: A digital camera 2 displays a divided pattern 30 consisting of a plurality of areas 31 on a display screen 20a of an LCD (liquid crystal display) 20 in MF (manual focusing) mode. A CPU (central processing unit) 51 calculates a focusing evaluation value fn indicating the focusing state of one area integrated by an outline extraction processing circuit 56 and a signal integrating circuit 57 on the basis of a contour signal and an image signal of the one area. The CPU 51 compares the calculated evaluation value fn with a history stored in a register Rn of an SDRAM 55 to judge whether the area 31 is focused on from the comparison result, and discriminatingly displays the area 31 whose focusing is detected and an area 31 other than it.
