PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To avoid harmful effect of deterioration of accuracy in variable valve control for each cylinder. SOLUTION: In this variable valve control for each cylinder, a target lift amount for each cylinder is established based on variation of intake air quantity between cylinders and variable valve lift mechanism is quickly moved to a position corresponding to a target lift amount of next intake cylinder at each predetermined timing. A variable valve control accuracy value for each cylinder indicating control accuracy of variable valve control for each cylinder is calculated based on deviation of an actual lift amount and a target lift amount for each cylinder during execution of the variable valve control for each cylinder. A variable valve control inhibition flag for each cylinder XSTOP is turned ON and variable valve control for each cylinder is inhibited when the variable valve control accuracy value for each cylinder deteriorates and exceeds a predetermined tolerance range. Lift amount restricted mode variable valve control is executed during inhibition of variable valve control for each cylinder, a common target lift amount for each cylinder is restricted to a predetermined value or more and the variable valve lift mechanism is controlled at a position corresponding to the common target lift amount for each cylinder.
