PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and method for efficiently detecting watermark information on the basis of format information acquired from content data. SOLUTION: The method includes a first step of acquiring the format information from the content data and extracting an area to be a detection target of contents on the basis of the format information, and a second step of detecting information from the extracted area of the contents. A plurality of detection areas predetermined from the format information are determined and when information cannot be detected from the extracted detection area, the other detection area is extracted to try the detection of information again.
