摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To operate an internal combustion engine while avoiding the occurrence of knocking when compression ratio is in a high compression ratio condition and is fixed. SOLUTION: In this internal combustion engine provided with a mechanism for changing compression ratio, driving timing of a suction and exhaust valve is changed into the direction in which temperature of suction air compressed in a combustion chamber is reduced when detecting that compression ratio is in a high compression ratio condition and is fixed. Alternatively, suction air temperature and cooling water temperature may be reduced or speed reduction ratio of a shifting gear unit may be switched to a larger value to increase operation rotation speed of the internal combustion engine. Consequently, knocking does not occur easily, and operation while avoiding the occurrence of knocking becomes possible even when compression ratio is in the high compression ratio condition and is fixed.
