PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To operate an internal combustion engine by reducing emission and further increasing driving calmness with the least possible fuel consumption. SOLUTION: After one cycle of operation of the internal combustion engine 10 ends, combustion gas is discharged from at least one combustion chamber 14 through at least one exhaust valve 36 operated by an actuator. In that case, gas pressure is measured which is generated within the combustion chamber 14 during the cycle of operation. A current open process of the exhaust valve 36 is calculated, and a current amount of operation of the internal combustion engine 10 having an influence on the open process is calculated. Based on the calculated current open process of the exhaust valve 36 and the calculated current amount of operation of the internal combustion engine 10, current gas pressure is calculated at least approximately which is generated within the combustion chamber 14 at the time of opening of the exhaust valve 36.
