An image generator (1) produces a polychromatic image. A deflection lens system (4) comprising two sub-lens systems (2,3), focuses the image so that it can be seen by a user wearing the head-mounted display device. The two sub-lens systems each include a diffractive lens unit (5,8) for beam deflection. The diffractive lens units are designed to compensate for dispersion errors.
