Preventing biological plugging of filters in the catalytic treatment of water comprises passing the water through a prefilter (3) with a low pressure drop before passing it through a catalyst (2) and then through a main filter (1) with a high pressure drop. An independent claim is also included for apparatus for the above purpose, comprising a catalyst between a prefilter and a main filter.
