<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a retardation plate and an elliptical polarizing plate contributing to the improvement of contrast and the enlargement of the angle of view in the front direction of a liquid crystal display device. <P>SOLUTION: The elliptical polarizing plate has a first optical anisotropic layer and a second optical anisotropic layer. When the retardation values of the first and the second optical anisotropic layers are Re<SB>1</SB>and Re<SB>2</SB>, respectively, Re<SB>1</SB>and Re<SB>2</SB>satisfy the following expression (1). Furthermore, the first optical anisotropic layer is formed by fixing a nematic hybrid-aligned liquid crystal compound, and the polarizing plate is constituted by layering the retardation plate and a polarizing film.
