PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for inspecting the surface properties of steel for a mold used for molding a plastic, capable of evaluating the surface properties of steel objectively, quantitatively and accurately so as to fit the same to the use of steel and to facilitate the quality control of the finish state of steel for the mold for molding the plastic. SOLUTION: Visible light, of which the wavelength region is 300-900 nm (preferably 400-800 nm) is thrown on the part with a surface area of 1 mm<SP>2</SP>or above (preferably 25 mm<SP>2</SP>or above) of the steel 3 for the mold at an incident angleαof 15°or below to measure the intensity of light regularly reflected from the surface of the steel for the mold. By this method, the surface properties of the steel for the mold for molding the plastic can be evaluated with highly objective and quantitative reliability.
