<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To optimize the contact/separation action of a heat equalizing member with/from a fixing roll in the fixing device provided with a heat equalizing member which can be brought into contact with or separated from the fixing roll. <P>SOLUTION: The fixing device 39 is provided with a heat equalizing roll 39d which can be brought into contact with or separated from the press roll 39b. Only when recording paper used for printing is other than that of the maximum size and when the continuously fixed number of sheets is equal to or greater than the specified number of sheets (10 sheets), the heat equalizing roll 39d is brought into contact with the press roll 39b, and the heat in the non paper passing part of the press roll 39b is taken away by the heat equalizing roll 39d.
