<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To adjust a crank position during engine stop. <P>SOLUTION: A controller 70 operates an armature side chopper circuit 40 and an excitation side chopper circuit 50 based on detection signal K1 and controls armature current Ia and excitation current Ib during engine stop. Consequently, the crank position is precisely adjusted to reduce start torque during cranking. A starter relay 30 is turned on after operating the armature side chopper circuit 40 at cranking.
