<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent contrast from being reduced in a displayed image, in a display having a non-radiative reflection-type spatial light modulation element for polarizing and modulating incident light and an illumination optical system for illuminating the reflection-type spatial light modulation element. <P>SOLUTION: Polarization direction correcting plates 11, 19 are provided on an optical path from a light source 1 to an image-forming lens 18, and the polarization direction correcting plates 11, 19 correct the polarization direction of transmission luminous flux according to the position with respect to the optical axis. Even if convergent luminous flux or diffused luminous flux is incident on a polarization separating film 14a of a polarization beam splitter 14, the polarization direction of the light rays apart from the optical axis is corrected and unwanted light is removed. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
