PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an air intake device for an internal combustion engine capable of reducing flow resistance by a valve shaft for suction gas. SOLUTION: This intake device for the internal combustion engine is provided with intake ports 5, 6 communicating with a combustion chamber 2. The intake ports are constituted in such a way that flow passage cross sectional area of the intake port is gradually increased toward the intake downstream side by increasing lateral width of the intake port gradually toward a shaft intrusion flow passage position from a reference flow passage position on the intake upstream side more than the shaft intrusion flow passage position where the valve shaft 17 intrudes into the intake port and a rate of flow passage cross sectional area of the intake port at the reference flow passage position to flow passage cross sectional area except cross sectional area of the valve shaft which is flow passage cross sectional area of the intake port at the shaft intrusion flow passage position becomes within a predetermined scope.
