PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a twisted nematic (TN) liquid crystal and super twisted nematic (STN) liquid crystal display having very short response time and good sharpness and angular dependence. SOLUTION: A nematic liquid crystal mixture comprises one or a plurality of compounds of formula (1) (wherein, at least one of two groups R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>2</SP>is a≤15C alkenyl unsubstituted, monosubstituted with CN or CF<SB>3</SB>or mono- or multisubstituted with a halogen; the other is, additionally, a≤15C alkyl unsubstituted, monosubstituted by CN or CF<SB>3</SB>or mono- or multisubstituted by a halogen; one or plural CH<SB>2</SB>in the groups may be substituted with O, S, C≡C, OC-C or O-CO, wherein O atoms are not directly connected to each other). By using the compounds in the mixture for TN and STN display, (a) high sharpness in an electrooptic characteristic line, (b) low temperature dependence in threshold voltage and (c) very rapid response time especially at a low temperature are obtained.
