摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To constitute a polarizing illuminator obtained by combining an integrator optical system with a polarized light changing optical system and having the high utilization efficiency of light so as to be small-sized and compact. SOLUTION: The polarizing illuminator 1 is equipped with a light source part 2 emitting light whose polarization direction is random, a 1st lens plate 3 constituted of a plurality of rectangular condensing lenses having rectangular outside shape, condensing the light emitted from the light source, and forming a plurality of secondary light source images, and a 2nd lens plate 4 arranged near a position where a plurality of secondary light source images are formed, and equipped with a condensing lens array, a polarized light separation prism array 420, aλ/2 phase difference plate 430, and an emitting side lens 440. The polarized light is separated in a stage where the minute secondary light source image is formed by the 1st lens plate 3 constituting the integrator optical system. Consequently, the spatial spread of an optical path associated with the separation of the polarized light is restrained, so that the polarizing illuminator can be small-sized though it is equipped with the polarized light changing optical system.
