PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thickener for detergents showing excellent thickening properties for body washes such as shampoo, rinse, and body shampoo, or detergents such as a kitchen detergent, as well as excellent stability with the passage of time, and foaming properties. SOLUTION: This thickener for detergents comprises a nonionic surfactant represented by general formula (1) and/or (2). In the formulas, R<SB>1</SB>is 6-24C saturated or unsaturated alkyl group that may have a hydroxy group; and R<SB>2</SB>is a hydrogen atom, 1-3C alkyl group or a hydroxyethyl group.
