PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer and a method for color printing which improve both print quality and throughput under a scanning system in which main scanning and subscanning are simply and alternately performed. SOLUTION: Nozzle arrays to eject inks of black, cyan, magenta, and yellow are arranged on a printhead. Each nozzle array has N nozzles 191, 192, ..., and 19N arranged in a subscanning direction at the interval k times the dot pitch of a print image. The nozzles 191, 192, ..., and 19N are driven at an intermittent timing while the printhead is performing main scanning, thereby forming dots at the interval s times the dot pitch. When main scanning is finished, subscanning is performed by a specified distance. The subscanning distance L is set to meet a following formula: L=N/(s×D×k), wherein S is an arbitrary integer of 2 or above and a divisor of N; k is an arbitrary integer of 2 or above in a prime relation with N/s; and D is the number of the nozzles per unit distance in the subscanning direction.
