The present invention provides compositions and methods for the treatment of central nervous system damage in a subject. More particularly, the invention provides a combination therapy for the treatment of a central nervous system ischemic condition or a central nervous system traumatic injury comprising the administration to a subject of a sodium ion channel blocker in combination with a cyclooxygenase-2 selective inhibitor.
