An electro-chemical assembly processes brine that is used in the preparation of drinking water. The assembly has a series of chambers of chambers separated by diaphragm partitions. Each chamber has an electrode, an inlet for brine and an outlet for reactants. Each cell has two bolt-linked plates whose adjacent faces incorporate elongated detents forming a chamber (4). The chamber (4) is sub-divided into two (6, 7) by a diaphragm (5). The plate end-faces (8) have dead-end holes (9) with hose connectors (10) linked to the sub-chambers (6, 7) by holes (11). Each chamber (6, 7) has an electrode (12) with an electrical connection (13) which emerges at the side of the plate (1). The chambers (4) are closed by seals.
