PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetically sensitive element which can have a track narrowed by allowing a free magnetic layer easy alignment of the direction of magnetization and which can be reduced in the size of the entire element, and also to provide its manufacturing method. SOLUTION: On both sides of a multilayer film 20, bias base layers 9 and 9 and bias layers 10 and 10 are formed. A maximum film thickness b of side face parts 9b and 9b of the bias base layers 9 and 9 in a direction parallel to a film surface of the free magnetic layer 7 is made smaller than a maximum film thickness (a) of bottoms 9a and 9a of the bias base layers 9a and 9. Widths W1, W2, and Wx of the bias layers 10 and 10 to the sides of the free magnetic layer 7 in the widthwise direction of the track are made larger than a film thickness in a film surface direction of extended parts 10b and 10b of the bias layers 10 and 10. Since the extended parts 10b and 10b are located below a bottom face 7a of the free magnetic layer 7, the film thickness in the film surface direction can be made very small in the extended parts 10b and 10b.
