PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve mass resolution by reducing a variation in flight time caused by the dispersion of kinetic energy held by respective ions accumulated inside an ion trap before discharge. SOLUTION: A period of time for permitting the free movement of ions by setting applied voltages to electrodes 21, 22 and 23 to be zero is provided after the accumulation of ions inside the ion trap 2 and cooling until discharging ions. During this free movement period, the respective ions expand according to the respective kinetic energy, and at the time of ion discharge, different kinetic energy is provided depending on existing positions of the ions. As a result, initial speeds of ions with the same mass number are aligned, and the ions reach a detector generally coincidently. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
