PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for changing compression ratio for achieving stabilization of fuel combustion in a variable compression ratio engine. SOLUTION: If, for example, heavy fuel is used, fuel combustion property is worsened. To cope with the above-mentioned case, an ECU 60 observes the transition until the number of revolutions of the engine reaches the number of idle revolutions when the engine is turned ON at time t1 and determines that fuel property is heavy fuel which does not vaporize easily if the number of revolutions drops. Consequently, since target compression ratio is set to a high compression ratio side, compression ratio is changed to high compression ratio. On the other hand, if the number of revolutions does not drop, fuel is light fuel having excellent fuel vaporization so that compression ratio is not changed to high compression ratio to achieve compression ratio based on the number of revolutions of the engine and engine load.
