PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To use a common control circuit for recording heads of various configurations. SOLUTION: In a recording apparatus which performs recording by causing a carriage equipped with a recording head having a plurality of recording elements arranged in a predetermined direction to scan above a recording medium in a direction intersecting the arrangement direction of the recording elements, raster recording data are stored in a recording data memory 6, and the recording data stored in the recording data memory 6 are stored in a buffer memory 7 having storing areas corresponding to each of the recording elements. A head parameter unit 4 for storing the information relating to the configuration of the recording head is provided. Corresponding to the information stored in the head parameter unit 4, a buffer control unit 2 and a recording-data memory read-out control unit 11 control order for transferring the recording data stored in the recording data memory 6 to the buffer memory 7 and order for reading out the recording data stored in the buffer memory 7.
