PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To allow a counterbalance thrust to always act on a movable part and to perform mold opening/closing operation at a high speed with high precision, in a mold clamping device constituted so as to be driven by an electrical hydraulic system to raise and lower an upper platen. SOLUTION: The mold clamping device 1 includes a ball screw 15 rotationally controlled by a servomotor 18 fixed on a fixed side, the ball screw nut 16 threaded with the ball screw 15, the mold clamping cylinder 10 fixed to the under surface of a fixed platen 3 and the mold clamping rod 11 connected to a movable platen 4 integrally to advance and retreat downward and having the ball screw nut 16 built in the leading end thereof. The mold clamping oil chamber 10a on the piston head side of the mold clamping rod 11 of the mold clamping cylinder 10 is pre-filled with hydraulic oil when a mold is opened and closed by the servomotor 18 and loaded with mold clamping pressure at the time of mold clamping and back pressure always producing counterbalance thrust by an accumulator AC is always applied to a back pressure oil chamber 10b on the rod side.
