The debugging method uses a diagnosis program (34), installed in the portable data carrier, for detection of faults in an installation routine for the user program (40) to be installed, with transfer of fault information (70) from the installation routine to the diagnosis program. Also included are Independent claims for the following: (a) a portable data carrier; (b) a computer program product containing a user program for a portable data carrier.
