PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper coating composition good in operability and solving the problems of increase in necessary binder quantity and decline in print gloss, etc. in producing coated paper by curtain coating or spray coating, and to provide a copolymer latex to be used in the composition. SOLUTION: The curtain coating or spray coating copolymer latex is a copolymer latex which is obtained by emulsion polymerization of a monomer mixture comprising (a) 23-58 pts. wt. of an aliphatic conjugated diene monomer, (b) 0.1-7 pt(s). wt. of an ethylene-based unsaturated carboxylic acid monomer, (c) 5-40 pts. wt. of vinyl cyanide and (d) 0-71.9 pt(s). wt. of another monomer copolymerizable with the monomers(a), (b) and (c).
