<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vehicle detector capable of precisely detecting another vehicle even when a part of the edge segment of a vehicle cannot be detected. <P>SOLUTION: A smoothing processing part 13 smoothes a predetermined area of an image taken by an imaging part 1 in a first image size. A peak position detection part 17 determines one or more peak positions within the predetermined range based on the smoothing result. A movement detection part 18 determines the moving directions of the peak positions. Thereafter, an identical area detection part 19 groups extreme value positions having the identical moving direction, and a searching area setting part 20 sets a searching area for every group. The smoothing processing part 13 smooths the searching area in a second image size, the peak position detection part 17 determines one or more peak positions within the searching area based on the smoothing result, and the movement detection part 18 determines the moving directions of the peak positions.
