A programmable unit is described, having debug resources for tracking and influencing the states which occur in the programmable unit and the processes being carried out. The described programmable unit is distinguished in that the debug resources comprise one or more components which have connections to input and/or output connections of the programmable unit, via which data is transmitted between other components of the programmable unit and external system components which are provided outside the programmable unit, and in that the debug resource components which are connected to the input and/or output connections are designed such that they can detect data which is transmitted via external lines which can be provided between the input and/or output connections and the external system components. <IMAGE>
