A bracing system for furniture comprises a plurality of bracing elements 14,15 which are formed of cable and connect opposing flat panels 10,11 by extending in a diagonal manner. The furniture may be provided with horizontal panels 12,13 that provide shelving. The cables are fixed at one end 16,17 to the panels and are attached to the panels via a tensioning mechanism at the other ends 18,19 such that the cables can be tensioned to ascribe more rigidity to the structure. The bracing may comprise a unitary piece of cabling (25, fig 2) that extends in diagonal and perpendicular extensions across the framework via a number of nodes that are defined by pulleys (26-31, fig 2). A single adjusting mechanism (32, fig 2) is affixed to the furniture and connects with the two ends of the cable. The pulleys provide a groove (44, fig 3) along which the cable can slide. Movement over the pulleys can be prevented by tightening of a mounting screw (45, fig 3) which moves an upper lug (43, fig 3) towards a pair of lower lugs (41,42, fig 3) to grip the cable 15.
|
