An upright type vacuum cleaner has a dirt bucket 30 removably mounted ion its upper housing 20. The bucket has a pivotable loop type handle 52 which operates a latch mechanism, such that when the bucket is attached to the cleaner, the can be rotated between a first position in which the latch is engaged and a second position where the latch is disengaged and the bucket can be removed. When being carried via the handle, the bucket can be easily emptied by simply tipping it relative to the handle. Also claimed is an upright vacuum cleaner with a removable bucket having a pivoted loop type handle which extends above the bucket when carried by the handle, and a filter assembly positioned relative to a dirt separation chamber at least partially formed by the bucket when the latter is attached to the vacuum cleaner housing, wherein the bucket ca be emptied by rotating from a carry position to an emptying position. A further claims relates to a method of operating a vacuum cleaner having a bucket with a rotatable handle, and a housing, comprising rotating the handle in a first direction to secure the bucket to the housing, thus rendering the cleaner operative; rotating the handle in a second direction to release the bucket; removing the bucket from the housing and placing the handle in a carrying position; and emptying the bucket by rotating it from a carry position to an emptying position. |
