[Also in Divisions B5, B8 and F4] In a method of forming packages from a pair of superposed webs of heat sealable material the lower web 200 is fed from roll 107 by an endless chain conveyer 202. Mounted on the chains 202 are clamps 217 each comprising an upper spring member 220 mounting roller 223 which rides over an opening member 229 at each side of the web having a cam 230 which forces the end 235 of a spring 220 away from the clamp base 218. Initially the web margins lie over the springs 220 but as each is moved against the tucking edge 237 of a plate 231 it is forced under the spring end 235. The clamp 217 then closes on the web as the rollers 223 move off the cams and the edges of the web are thus securely gripped. Rollers 225, 226 run in guides alongside the chain, the guides for the former ensuring transverse tautness in the web. |
