A hob cutter includes a cutting portion (14) and an abrading portion (16) in mechanical communication with the cutting portion (14). The cutting portion (14) includes a plurality of hob teeth (18) having at least one gash 20 extending therethrough to define a cutting face (30) on a front of each hob tooth and a trailing face (31) on a back of each hob tooth. The abrading portion (16) includes a plurality of abrading teeth (42) positioned adjacent to each other. Both the hob teeth (18) and the abrading teeth (42) are continuously formed and helically arranged.
